A computer's audio ports link the computer's sound hardware with your speakers, microphone, headsets or other audio equipment. There are many possible sources of sound on a computer, including music CDs, online videos and games.

Regardless of the source, all sounds start as digital audio – numbers in a file. Between the source file and the speaker, the audio must be converted to an analog format. Microphones capture an analog audio signal, which is converted to digital. The conversions happen inside or outside the computer, depending on the port type. Higher-end motherboards and computers with discrete audio cards include additional ports for connecting surround-sound speakers or external sound systems Audio interfaces define physical parameters and interpretation of signal.

The color code used by analog audio jacks is the following: Pink: Mic in, Blue: Line in, Green: Front speakers out, Black (or dark blue on some older boards): Rear speakers out, Orange: Center/subwoofer out, Gray: Middle speakers out.

The letters "CE" are the abbreviation of French phrase "Conformité Européene" which literally means "European Conformity". CE Marking on a product is a manufacturer's declaration that the product complies with the essential requirements of the relevant European health, safety and environmental protection standards and laws.

The CE marking is also found on products sold outside the EEA that are manufactured in, or designed to be sold in, the EEA. This makes the CE marking recognizable worldwide even to people who are not familiar with the European Economic Area. It is in that sense similar to the FCC Declaration of Conformity used on certain electronic devices sold in the United States.

Celeron is a member of the family of microprocessors from Intel that is based on its P6 architecture. A quad-core processor is a chip with four independent units called cores that read and execute central processing unit (CPU) instructions such as add, move data, and branch.

Within the chip, each core operates in conjunction with other circuits such as cache, memory management, and input/output (I/O) ports. The individual cores in a quad-core processor can run multiple instructions at the same time, increasing the overall speed for programs compatible with parallel processing. The cores are typically integrated onto a single semiconductor wafer.

Quad-core and higher multi-core processor configurations have become common for general-purpose computing, not only for PCs, but also for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. (Rugged VA)

The Celeron Ultramobile CPU requires one of the lowest power consumptions amongst mini computers. While their electric input is minimal, their performance is comparable to a desktop CPU. It has a low operating temperature that permits functionality in a fanless configuration. Lower operating temperature translates into longevity and stability. (Rugged Mini FX)

Optional combo data input accessory offers smart card, MSR, and fingerprint reader. A Smart Card Reader is a data input device that reads data from a card-shaped storage medium. It can be contact or non-contact type. A contact type reader requires a physical connection to the cards, made by inserting the card into the reader. This is the most common reader type for applications such as ID and Stored Value. This communication has the advantage of direct coupling to the reader and is considered more secure. The other advantage is speed. This interface enables larger data transport without the overhead of anti-collision and wireless breakdown issues that are a result from the card moving in and out of the reader antenna range. The other type is Contactless readers. This type of reader works with a radio frequency that communicates when the card comes close to the reader. Many contactless readers are designed specifically for Payment, Physical Access Control and Transportation applications.
Magnetic Stripe Reader (MSR) Input is used to acquire data from a "mag-stripe" card such as a credit or debit card. The information stored on the black magnetic strip is transferred to the device when the card is "swiped" through the MSR.
A direct fingerprint reader (DFR), also called a fingerprint scanner or fingerprint reader, is a biometrics device that uses automated methods of recognizing a person based on unique physical characteristics of a person's fingerprint.

A Docking Station is a device in which a laptop computer, smartphone, or other mobile device may be placed for charging, providing access to a power supply and to peripheral devices or auxiliary features. A docking station or port replicator or dock provides a simplified way of plugging-in an electronic device. Because a wide range of dockable devices—from mobile telephones to wireless mice—have different connectors, power signaling, and uses, docks are not standardized and are therefore often designed with a specific make and model of a device in mind.

Portable computers can dock and undock hot, cold or standby, depending on the capabilities of the system. In a cold dock or undock, one completely shuts the computer down before docking/ undocking. In a hot dock or undock, the computer remains running when docked/undocked. Standby docking or undocking, an intermediate style used in some designs, allows the computer to be docked/undocked while powered on, but requires that it be placed into a sleep mode prior to docking/undocking.

DVI stands for Digital Visual Interface-Digital. DVI-D cables are used to connect a video signal from computers to LCD monitors, HDTV displays, projectors, and cable boxes. DVI-D cables carry a digital video signal. The interface is designed to transmit uncompressed digital video and can be configured to support multiple modes.

The DVI specification is compatible with the VGA interface. This compatibility, along with other advantages, led to its widespread acceptance over competing digital display standards. Although DVI is predominantly associated with computers, it is sometimes used in other consumer electronics such as television sets and DVD players.

Most DVI connector types – contain pins that pass digital video signals. These come in two varieties: single link and dual link. Single link DVI employs a single 165 MHz transmitter that supports resolutions up to 1920 × 1200 at 60 Hz. Dual link DVI adds six additional pins (located in the center of the connector) for a second transmitter increasing the bandwidth and supporting resolutions up to 2560 × 1600 at 60 Hz. (Rugged VA)

DVI-I is a connectivity feature which carries both an analog and digital signal, can send out a digital signal (for digital displays such as flat panel lcd monitors) as well as analog signal (for older displays such as a crt monitor). DVI-I is one of the most common digital video cables you’ll see on desktops and LCD monitors today. It’s the most similar to VGA connectors, with up to 24 pins. DVI-I can stream up to 1920×1200 HD video and can support up to 2560×1600 pixels with its dual-link connectivity. DVI-I does not support HDCP encryption by default, therefore with additional, HDMI connectivity you can rest assured on your computer connectivity to newer and more modern viewing devices. Lumens is basically the SI derived unit of Luminous Flux. Luminous Flux is defined as the measure of the total quantity of visible light which is emitted by a source. This flux differs from that of power or radiant flux which include all the electromagnetic waves that are emitted by a source. Luminous flux is actually weighted at the base of the luminosity function of the sensitivity of the human’s eye on different wavelengths. Lumens is associated with lux. Lux is one lumen per square meter. The brightness or luminosity function of digital technology is based on the total amount of light which is projected in lumens that a human eye can bear safely. It is important to carefully structure the lumen power in digital products to avoid severe damage to the eyesight of the user. All of our products have a carefully selected lumen power and are safe to use.

The luminosity of an object is a measure of its intrinsic brightness and is defined as the amount of energy the object emits in a fixed time. It is essentially the power output of the object and, as such, it can be measured in units such as Watts.
Luminosity is a basic indicator of how bright the product screen is. The luminosity of a screen is a variable that considers important factors such as preventing damage to the eyes of users and achieving optimal brightness. Luminosity is invariant in geometric optics which means that the luminance at the output is the same as it is at the input. For real, passive and optical systems like the ones we use for our technology, the output luminance is at most equal to the input. Tangent products provide exceptional luminosity.

The luminous intensity of light per unit area that is traveling in a given direction is usually measured by a photometric attribute called luminance. An SI unit of luminance is known as a candela per square meter (cd/m2). A nit is a non-SI unit of measure term that used to more easily describe the measurement. One nit is equal to one candela per square meter (cd/m2).. Typically, a computer screen emits between 50 to 300 cd/m2. A nit describes the amount of light that is reflected, emitted or passed through a particular area while falling within a given solid angle. We measure the luminance of our provided products in nits in order to make it easy for users to understand.

A PCAP multi-touch screen is the Projected Capacitive touch screen, also known as PCT. The PCAP allows the user to handle multi-touch on the screens. It works by using a conductive grid, which recognizes the change in the electromagnetic field through the touch of fingers. The conductive grid then creates the electrostatic field, which is responsible for producing the grid pattern using electrodes. When the finger or stylus touches the screen, it interferes with the electric field that is already present, and with this interference, the movement is detected. The multiple touch functionality of the PCAP provides support for up to 16 touches. The multiple touch gestures that it identifies include flick, pinch, expand, click, tap and rotate. A PCAP multi-touch screen has enhanced and advanced sensitivity able to identify input with a finger, stylus, and even gloved finger. PCAP is available on small to large sized screens.

PS/2 stands for Personal System/2. It is a female 6-pin port standard that connects to the male mini-DIN cable. PS/2 was introduced by IBM to connect mouse and keyboard to personal computers. The PS/2 designs on keyboard and mouse interfaces are electrically similar and employ the same communication protocol. PS/2 mouse and keyboard connectors have also been used in non-IBM PC-compatible computer systems,

This port is not commonly used now, though some systems compatible with IBM may have this port. However, PS/2 ports continue to be included on many computer motherboards, and are favored by some users, for various reasons. PS/2 ports may also be favored for security reasons in secure environments as they allow USB ports to be totally disabled, preventing the connection of any USB removable disks and malicious USB devices.

The PS/2 interface also has much lower latencies for keyboards due to the interrupt-driven manner PS/2 keyboards communicate with the computer by default compared to the polled nature of USB keyboards where the USB controller hardware polls USB keyboards, which can be important in some real-time applications.

A registered jack (RJ) is a standardized physical network interface for connecting telecommunications or data equipment. An 8-pin/8-position plug or jack is commonly used to connect computers onto Ethernet-based local area networks (LAN).

Registered Jack 45 (RJ45) is a standard type of physical connector for network cables. RJ45 connectors are most commonly seen with Ethernet cables and networks.

RJ45 plugs feature eight pins to which the wire strands of a cable interface electrically. Each plug has eight locations spaced about 1 mm apart into which individual wires are inserted using special cable crimping tools. The industry calls this type of connector 8P8C, shorthand for Eight Position, Eight Contact.

A rugged computer is a computer specifically designed to operate reliably and efficiently in harsh usage environments and conditions, such as strong vibrations, extreme temperatures, and oily, wet or dusty conditions. They are designed from inception for the type of rough use typified by these conditions, not just in the external housing but in the internal components and cooling arrangements as well. In general, ruggedized and hardened computers share the same design robustness and frequently these terms are interchangeable. Rugged computers are engineered to operate in the face of multiple challenges including shock and vibration, temperature and humidity, corrosion and abrasion, acoustic noise reduction, low pressure/ altitude, water immersion and electromagnetic interference.

S

Serial ports transmit data sequentially one bit at a time. So they need only one wire to transmit 8 bits. The name "serial" comes from the fact that a serial port "serializes" data. That is, it takes a byte of data and transmits the 8 bits in the byte one at a time. The advantage is that a serial port needs only one wire to transmit the 8 bits (while a parallel port needs 8). The disadvantage is that it takes 8 times longer to transmit the data than it would if there were 8 wires. Serial ports lower cable costs and make cables smaller.

Serial ports are usually 9-pin or 25-pin male connectors. They are also known as COM (communication) ports or RS323C ports. Serial ports are used to connect the following: External modems, Serial mouse or pointing devices such as trackballs or touchpads, Plotters, Label printers, Serial printers, PDA docking stations, Digital cameras, PC-to-PC connections used by file transfer programs.

Our Rugged Mini PCs ensure seamless functionality under shock and vibration. They operate consistently in spite of external movement and hostility. Smart Card Reader is a data input device that reads data from a card-shaped storage medium.

VGA is an acronym for Video Graphics Array. This is a 15-pin, D-subminiature style port usually located on the back or side of a laptop computer or the back of a desktop system. Users employ VGA ports to transfer analog video signals from one device such as monitor or a LCD display using VGA cables.

The arrangement of the 15 pins on the VGA port is in three groups of five pins, lined up horizontally. The port is the "female" version of the pair, meaning it appears as a series of holes, while the cable is the "male" version with the appropriate pins.

VGA ports first appeared in 1987 and are analog components capable of carrying red, green, blue, horizontal sync, and vertical sync (RGBHV) video signals.

A watchdog timer keeps account of all the processes the computer is running and checks whether the computer is operating correctly or not. The watchdog timer is an electronic timer, also known as computer operating properly (COP) timer. The main function of the watchdog timer is to detect any sort of malfunction during the processes and recover the computer from it. During a normal process, the computer resets the watchdog timer regularly. If there is any sort of malfunctioning and the computer does not reset than the timer would produce a timeout signal, indicating any sort of malfunctioning. During this “timeout” the computer would be in a secure state, until the malfunction is remedied. The presence of a watchdog timer prevents severe damage from occurring. Watchdog timers are commonly found in embedded systems and other computer-controlled equipment where humans cannot easily access the equipment or would be unable to react to faults in a timely manner. In such systems, the computer cannot depend on a human to invoke a reboot if it hangs; it must be self-reliant.
